INTRODUCTION TO MENTAL HEALTH

TO BE HEALTHY AS A WHOLE, MENTAL WELLNESS PLAYS A ROLE

Mental health refers to our cognitive, behavioral and emotional well-being. It can affect daily life, relationships and even physical health. It is not just about the way we think but also the way we feel and behave. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, make choices and take decisions.

The WHO (World Health Organization) stresses that “Mental health is not just the absence of mental disorder.” Being mentally healthy means that we have the capacity to cope with life, make the most of our potential and play a full part in family, friends, workplace and community.

HEALTH IS WEALTH

DEFINITION OF HEALTH

Health is defined as ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well being’ by WHO. Generally, we all know health as the present condition of the body, also can be said as physical well being or physical health. But actually, health is of two types- physical health and mental health. Physical health is all about the body and mental health is all about the brain.

In today’s world, physical health is given more importance than mental health and in countries like India mental health is given nearly no importance. In fact many people don’t even know about mental health. We feel that it’s about happiness and the thoughts running in the head but it is much much more than that.

Mental health is a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his/her own potential, cope with the normal stresses of life and can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. A good mental health is very important in every stage of our life because poor mental health can cause distress, poor physical health, impact on day-to-day functioning and relationships and premature death from suicide.
